William Henry Blackwood Lieutenant Commander, USN, 85, passed away Jan. 11, 2008. He was born May 25, l922.

Bill joined the Navy in 1941 and served in the Navy for 22 years. He was a Pearl Harbor Survivor, serving on the USS California. Later, he was fighter pilot. The family moved to Escondido in 1964. Bill developed a portable hand control for Piper Cherokee air craft so that Handicapped people could fly.

He was a flight instructor at Palomar Airport, teaching able bodied to fly as well as handicapped. Also taught ground school at Palomar College. In 1974, Bill was named, "Instructor of the Year" by the FAA (Federal Aviation Ass'n). Bill belonged to the Elks club, Optimist Club and Rotary.

Surviving are his wife, Dottie; daughters, Le Ayn Ingels and Jo Lyn Blackwood of San Marcos; granddaughters, Tyra Ingels and Taryn Ingels; three sisters, Marjorie Price and Sandra True of Denver, Dorothy Gwilt of Sacramento.

A celebration of life will be held 2pm Monday, Feb. 4, at the California Center of the Arts in Escondido. Internment with full Military honors, will be held at 1pm Tuesday, Feb. 5, at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the PVA (paralyzed veterans of America), 8810 Rio San Diego Drive Suite 1121, San Diego, Calif. 92108 or, to the Escondido Rotary Club, which meets on Tuesdays.
