Russell C. Tanner
(September 28, 1927 - November 29, 2011)

Russell C. Tanner, age 84, of Alma; died, Tuesday night November 29th, 2011 at his residence after a short illness. He was a native of Bacon County, son of the late John Asberry Tanner and Easter Ellis Tanner and was also preceded in death by a son, Vasco Carroll Tanner, a grandson, Jerry Franklin Tanner, 2 son-in-law, David Morgan and Edward Leasure, 6 brothers, Bill, Luther, Edgar, Rab, Norman and Curtis Tanner, 5 sisters, Alice Hood, Gladys Taylor, Myrtice Bennett, Eunice Gilliard and Jenness C. Parker. Russell was Sheriff of Bacon County for 28 years, served one term as President of the Georgia Sheriff's Association, served two years as chairman of Bacon County Commissioners, a member of Bacon Masonic Lodge #59, the American Legion, V. F. W., was a veteran of WW II while serving in the U S Army and a member of the Pine Level Free Will Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Louise Johnson Tanner of Alma, a son, William Larry Tanner and wife Vickie, two daughters, Glenda Morgan, Sandra Hendrickson and husband Gary all of Alma, a daughter-in-law, Shirley Tanner Clough of Blackshear. Also, 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews survive.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at Pine Level Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Eric Brown and Rev. Wayne Miracle officiating, Joe Boatright will be doing a personal eulogy. Interment will follow in Pine Lawn Cemetery. The body will be carried to the church at 1:00 P M to lie in state. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home Thursday evening between 6 and9 P M.

Active pallbearers will be grandsons, Jamie and John Tanner, Scott , Travis and Chris Ellis and Russell Leasure. All others in attendance will be considered as honorary.

Crosby Funeral Home is in charge of all the arrangements.
