Mary Jo was born to Joe Eldon McDowell and Lela Kinkade McDowell, April 24, 1922 in Bonham. She was the sixth of eight children. Mary Jo has one living sister: Hazel Inez Tilger and four sisters that preceded her in death: Pauline Rigdon, Lorene Edwards, Evelyn Mhoon, and Leola Alford. Two children died infant deaths shortly after birth.

Mary Jo is survived by two sons: Woodrow Starkey and wife, Sandra Bradway and Terry Lynn Starkey. Two grandsons: Jared Starkey and wife, Heidi, Jeffery Starkey and wife, Christi. One granddaughter Rhonda Wellman and husband, Todd. Mary Jo leaves behind six great grandchildren: Colton Brook Starkey, Dayton Briley Starkey, Baley Starkey, Kendal Starkey, Chandler Wellman and Jordan Wellman. Also, several nieces and nephews. Mary Jo had two very special friends and caregivers, Peggy Reese and Henry Rawa.

Mary Jo wore many hats through her life's journey as a seamstress, hairdresser, nanny, home health caregiver and as a co-owner, with her late husband Mitchell Lee; she managed the office and café of a fish camp on Lake Breckenridge. Her passion was painting and she was an incredible artist. Her favorite medium was water scenes and to look at one of her paintings you could almost hear the babbling brook or the waves lapping at the shore.

Mary Jo was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend that will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Family night for Mary Jo will be from 6 -8 p.m. Sunday, December 4 at Waldo Funeral Home in Sherman.
