North Augusta, SC…….Mr. William Lewis Hendon, 90, of Ashley Circle, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, September 25, 2011 at his residence.
Born April 29, 1921, near Lineville, AL, Mr. Hendon was married for 62 years to the late Edna McDaniel Hendon. He is survived by a son, Dr. Bill Hendon and his wife Freda of LaFollette, TN, and his grandson, Whit; one daughter, Paula Hendon Hulsebus and her husband Tim of Belvedere, SC, and grandsons, Tyson, Shane, and Corey, and a great granddaughter, Ella.
Born to James Whit Hendon and Annie Mae East, he had three sisters, Dorothy Daniel, Patricia Gunn, and Sara Bankhead; and two brothers, Hugh and George Hendon. The Hendon family has always been faithful to honor their heritage and family ties with their annual family reunions. As the sole survivor of his original family, it is fitting that Mr. Hendon, or "Lewis" to his siblings, "Uncle Lewis" to their children, and "Paw Paw" to his grandsons, moved back in with his family the day after the annual reunion was held in Alabama.
Mr. Hendon grew up on the family farm in Alabama where he developed a life-long love of gardening, fishing, hunting, and woodworking. He remained active in these pursuits until 89 years of age. He shared with and passed on his love of the outdoors to his son, Bill. One of his life's greatest joys was to take his grandsons fishing. Going fishing with "Paw Paw" is a treasured memory for each of them. The last fishing trip occurred last spring where his grandsons waded through knee deep water while carrying him in his wheelchair to the fishing dock where they had set up a reclining chair for him. Amazingly, he caught every fish that day.
Mr. Hendon, like most of his generation who learned the value of hard work and self reliance, had a variety of work experiences. He worked for Roane Anderson of Oak Ridge, TN during the Oak Ridge nuclear project, he then moved to LaFollette, TN to work for Imperial Reading where he retired as office manager. Mathematically inclined, he taught accounting at the Jacksboro, TN Vocational/Technical School. He was employed with and retired from the LaFollette Housing Authority and he completed his employment at 80 years of age in 2001 as a real estate agent for Ayers Real Estate Company.
For many years, Mr. Hendon was active in the Kiwanis Club and the First Baptist Church of LaFollette, TN. After moving to Belvedere in 2001, he continued his faithful membership at the First Baptist Church of North Augusta.
