Born in High Ewebank under Stainmore in County Westmorland. Husband of Margaret C. maiden name unknown. Son of Jonathan Alderson and Mary née Beadle Alderson. John, Margaret and daughter Sarah, immigrated in 1830. Father of four. First Pittsburgh City Directory reference for John Alderson was in 1852, he was listed as a shoemaker living at 235 Second Avenue. In 1856 he resided at 235 2nd Avenue, Pittsburgh which was the location of his sawmill. Later, John and his brother-in-law, George Fawcett, owned and operated two saw mills and lumber yards during and after the Civil War. The second mill was located at Brady Street. A John Alderson filed a Declaration of Intent for citizenship on 27 December 1832. John's death was a suicide; he was found drowned in Succop's Pond very near to his home on Shady Lane [Avenue]. This was in the 22nd Ward of Pittsburgh, now known as Squirrel Hill. John was known to be depressed from losses from the Panic of 1873 and other legal difficulties. Alderson Street in Squirrel Hill is named for John and located on his property.

Mr. John Alderson Drowns Himself in an Ice Pond.
This morning at the early hour John Alderson, an old and highly respected citizen of the Twenty-second ward, committed suicide by drowning, it is supposed. For some time past Mr. Alderson has been despondent, in consequence of financial reverses, and it was noticed by his friends that these troubles lately settled on his mind. He was an administrator of an estate in which the accounts balanced against him, and was also one of the unfortunate stockholders of the United States Bank, which went by the board soon after the Financial Panic of 1873. This morning about 2 o'clock Mr. Alderson escaped from the house and it is believed proceeded to Succop's Ice Pond, three or four hundred yards distant, and threw himself into the water. The pond which is ten or twelve feet deep, was dragged this morning by friends of the deceased, and his body was found. The Coroner was notified, and will hold an inquest this afternoon.
