DOWNS - Ethel V. Paynter, 88, Downs, died Thursday, Jan. 2, at the Downs Nursing Center after a long illness.

Mrs. Paynter was born Sept. 3, 1897, near Woodston. She was former head of the lunch programs in the Wichita grade schools and the Woodston schools. She had also been head cook at the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity at Kansas State University.

She was a member of the United Brethren Church, which is now the United Methodist Church of Woodston.

Survivors include a son, Maurice of Downs; a sister, Evelyn Poore of Oakley; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Woodston, the Revs. Ralph Rosenblad and Lyle Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Ash Rock Cemetery, near Woodston.

Memorials may be made to the church. Visitation is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the Domoney Funeral Home, Downs.
