Connie Louise Whitt, 38-year-old wife of Radford Fire Chief Calvin "Cabby" Whitt, lost her battle to cancer Monday.

She died at Radford Community Hospital.

Connie was the object of one of the most extensive fund raising projects ever undertaken in Radford.

Because of her popularity in the community and her extensive battle with the fatal disease, various groups and individuals raised money over a two-year period.

An employee of Cook's Clean Center prior to illness, Connie was a faithful supporter of the fire department, even before her husband became chief. Her last public appearance was at the Fireman's barbecue in May. The support of the community meant much to the Whitt family, according to Cabby. "We knew we had friends and all," he once said. "But we didn't have any idea it was anything like this.... Just tell everybody we're very grateful."

In addition to her support of the fire department, Connie was an active member of the Central United Methodist Church.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are two sons Curt and Craig Whitt, both at home, as well as her mother Louise M. Jones, also of Radford.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Central United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Irwin and the Rev. Henry Horton officiating. Internment will follow at Sunrise Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Seaver-Sanders Funeral Home in Radford. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Central United Methodist Church Organ Fund.
