British Army George Cross recipient. Andrews was the son of William and Josephine Victoria Cecila Andrews of Taunton, husband of Hilda Alecia Andrews and the father of Joy, Sheila, Barbara and Pat. On August 26, 1940 as a second lieutenant with the Royal Engineers he was in charge of No. 22 and 23 Bomb Disposal Sections, R.E., which were given the task of extracting the fuse of a bomb. Some difficulty was experienced, and several attempts at removal were unsuccessful. Andrews then placed his section under cover and himself succeeded in exploding the bomb. He was blown a considerable distance. For his great coolness and keenness he was awarded the Empire Gallantry Medal on September 17, 1940. This was the last list of awards of the Empire Gallantry Medal since one week later, King George VI announced the creation of the George Cross which would rank next to the Victoria Cross and be awarded for acts of supreme gallantry. Provision was made for living recipients of the Empire Gallantry Medal to receive the George Cross. One year later in September 1941, Andrews, now a captain, was presented with the George Cross at Buckingham Palace by the King. In July 1944, serving as a major, he died as the result of war wounds aged 36.
