Captain Martin graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Class of 1934, where he was known as "Jack".

He is the recipient of the Navy Cross, awarded for actions during World War II. Specifically for extraordinary heroism in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the submarine U.S.S. Hammerhead (SS-364) from September 9, 1944 to 2 November 1944 in enemy controlled waters of the South China Sea.

The award presentation specifies: "In a series of daring and well-executed night surface actions, Commander Martin directed his submarine in three attacks on two enemy convoys which resulted in the sinking of six hostile ships and in the damaging of one enemy cargo vessel. Skillfully maneuvering his ship in the face of enemy countermeasures and in very dangerous waters, he contributed materially to the success of his missions. By his courage, professional skill and devotion to duty, Commander Martin upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."

General Orders: Commander 7th Fleet: Serial 0586 (February 8, 1945). He retired as a Captain, U.S. Navy and was a mathematics instructor at the University of Wisconsin.

He was the son of Harding Otho Martin and Mary Luddy Henderson. He married his childhood sweetheart, Barbara "Bobbie" Brown, on April 15, 1946 at the Great Lakes Naval Base in Great Lakes, IL and became parents with the birth of their daughter, Wendy Harlean on June 15, 1947.
