Kuchen is in the Schwabian area of Southwest Germany on the Fils river between Stuttgart and Ulm. Protestant parish registers (1558-1898) of baptisms, marriages, deaths, family registers, confirmations, etc., in Staatsarchiv Stuttgart were filmed by LDS on three microfilm reels in 1989, i.e., #1658778, 1658779 and 1658780. A column note on Leonard's baptism page records - "gone to Pennsylvania."

NOTE: The collected work on the films was through the research of Russell L. Warner, GRS, Eaton Rapids, Eaton, MI (Feb. 18, 1912-Sep. 26, 1980).

Groninger; Chroninger; Croninger: same family, different spellings. (Also, Kroninger.)

About 100 years later (1856) two connected Groninger families also emigrated from Kuchen. One family settled in Pennsylvania, where the father entered the Union Army and was killed in the Civil War. The other family settled in Wisconsin, from whence a descendant is a current "cousin." Most of the people in the United States with the above listed surnames descend from these Kuchen emigrees.

NOTE: Joseph [Sr.]'s line adopted the "C" spelling when they moved to Ohio in the early 1800's, although the "C" spelling is sometimes found in Derrstown (present Lewisburg, PA) records of Joseph. The "h" [Ch] was added later as the family moved farther west, ending up in Missouri. Richard Chroninger started his ancestral research in 1987 and found the files of Russell Warner filmed by the LDS (reel #987306) to be of great help and interest.
