John K. Milnes of Plymouth, Minn., formerly of Coldwater, passed away on Friday, Dec. 2, 2011, in Coldwater. He was 75.

He was born on Dec. 13, 1935, in Coldwater, to William Alfred and Marguerite E. (Shattuck) Milnes. He was baptized at St. Mark's and has been a member there most of his life. He attended elementary, junior high and senior high in Coldwater. He was president of his junior and senior class. While in school, he worked at the Olmstead Dairy.

He married Fae Neidlinger in 1958. They raised four sons, Scott, Mark, Andy and Corey. Family was always important to him.

He attended Western Michigan University and received a degree in Business Administration. His major was marketing and his minor was communications. He was president of the Men's Union Board and a member of the Men's Judicial Board. He became a member of ODK, a national honorary leadership society as well.

He moved back to Coldwater in 1959 to raise his family and to work with his brother in the family business, "Southern Michigan Grocer Company," which was started by his grandfather in 1917. John and his brother Bill sold the business in 1980.

While in Coldwater, John was active in the schools and was a member of the Century Bank Board of Directors and member of the Noon Rotary Club, as well as the president of the Tibbits Opera Foundation from 1975 to 1976.

After the sale of the business, John and his family moved to Cadillac. He was president of Mid-State Food Service Distributors for 10 years. He again was active in the community and became president of the Chamber of Commerce for two years and continued his membership in the Rotary Club.

In 1995, he moved to Grand Rapids to become a director, managing the food service distribution division of Total Logistic Control before retiring in 2005.

In 2006, John was divorced and married Anita Barnes. After their marriage, he moved to Plymouth, Minn., where he and Anita lived.

John is survived by his wife, Anita; the mother of his children, Fae Milnes; his sons, Scott Milnes, Mark (Jeanne) Milnes, Andy (Elaine) Milnes and Corey (Toni) Milnes; his brother. William (Jeanie) Milnes; and his sister, Marguerite "Molly" (Lee) VanStone; his loving grandchildren; step-great grandchildren; nieces; nephews; his step-children, Evelyn (Bob) Raymond and Steven Barnes, and many loving friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Coldwater with the Rev. Fr. Stephen Bartlett and the Rev. Fr. Paul Brisbane officiating. Interment of ashes will follow in the church columbarium. A gathering of friends and family will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011, at the church and again on Wednesday, just prior to the service, beginning at 10 a.m.. Arrangements are being cared for by Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater.
