Founder of the Howard Miller Clock Company. Howard's father Herman founded the Herman Miller Clock Company in 1926 as a division of his office furniture store. In 1937, it was established as a separate company, renamed the Howard Miller Clock Company under Howard's leadership . Howard learned from his father the art of clock making in the Black Forest region in Germany and was dedicated to adhering to these strict standards of both beauty and accuracy. Purchasing the Kieninger Company in Germany guaranteed the qualify of the mechanical movements. During World War II, his company worked with Ford Motor Company in making anti-aircraft covers. After the war, Herman utilized the design skills of George Nelson, the Director of Design at Herman Miller Furniture, and introduced the Ball, Spike and Spindle clocks and a line of ceramic wall clocks. Some of these avant-garde pieces are now valued by collectors. In the late 1960's, Plexiglas floor and wall clocks, and "Day Timers" featuring day and date were added to the catalogue along with the introduction of their most familiar product, the Grandfather clock. Howard's business acumen and dedication to quality has propelled his company into one of the most recognized clock manufacturers.
