Minnie Mae Lamb King was born May 22, 1934 in Smiths Station, Alabama to Otis and Janie Vaughn Lamb. She was one of nine surviving siblings. She attended grade school through high school in Birmingham, Alabama. She became a "native Texan" after her marriage to Ernest Victor King, who was stationed with the U.S. Army at Fort Sam Houston, TX. She bore and raised three children who were part of the St. Paul United Methodist Church family from childhood. Mrs. King attended San Antonio College and graduated from Our Lady of the Lake College with degrees in Education and Social Work.
She attained a Master of Education from the University of California. With a passion for educating children, she worked for the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) for over three decades as a teacher, principal, and principal appraiser. She was also among those teachers who were the first to racially integrate the teaching staff of the SAISD. Her compassion and love for children was evident in her volunteer activities, such as a child advocate for CASA and an advocate for women and girls through her work for the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She loved reading and supported the San Antonio Public Library Foundation and participated in a monthly book review. Minnie King touched many lives both in and out of the classroom.
The impact of her advocacy was honored when she received The Yellow Rose of Texas Award for her contributions to her community and to Texas. Minnie King was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Gwendolyn; son, Ernest Victor King, Jr. As wife, mother, sister, and friend, she leaves many to mourn; her beloved husband, Ernest V. King; daughters, Blythe King and Sharalyn King Johnson (Durkee); two grandchildren, Blythe Ann Johnson and Brian Tyler King; six sisters, Maggie Mitchell, Smiths, AL; Sara Nell Wallace, San Jose, CA; F. Kate Davis, Detroit, MI; Barbara Gay (Clayton), San Antonio, TX; Willie "Billie" Burrell (Dudley), St. Anne, IL; Joyce Anderson (Tevester), Jackson, MS; one brother, Otis Lamb, Jr. (Berthenia), Ft. Worth, TX; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
