Deputy Sheriff Richard Rhyne, 58, of Aberdeen, N.C. joined the Moore County Sheriff's Department on April 28, 2007, after retiring as the Foxfire police chief in 2006. He also previously worked as a member of the Pinehurst Police Department. In sum, he served the law enforcement community for 37 years. Deputy Rhyne was shot and killed after responding to a report of trespassing at a home on Morrison Bridge Road. Deputy Rhyne was born to the late Richard Carlton Rhyne and Margie H. Thompson Rhyne. He began his career in law enforcement in 1974 with the Pinehurst Police Dept. obtaining the rank of Sergeant. He served as chief of police the entire time at Foxfire Village until his retirement in 2006. Deputy Rhyne worked after retirement with the Moore County Sheriffs Dept. since April 28, 2007. He was a lifelong member of the North Carolina's Chief's Association. Deputy Rhyne is survived by his wife of forty years, Wanda Thomas Rhyne; a son, Lt. Col Allen Rhyne and wife Lt. Col Jessica Rhyne of Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, TX.; two grandchildren, Ruby and Roxy Rhyne; two sisters, Brenda Morton and husband Ronnie of Landrum, SC, and Cindy Bennett of Pfafftown, NC; seven nephews, Brian McCallum, Mitch Pomeroy, Rob Pomeroy, Ron Morton, Chris Boseman, Sean Boseman, Norman Thomas; seven nieces, Allison Jenkins, Christine Jenkins, Stephanie Gray, Sonya Armistead, Mellisa Bennett, Carla LaPlaca, Deborah Cockman. Deputy Rhyne was preceded in death by a sister, Gail Jenkins.
