James H. Draper was the son of Jeremiah Draper and Nancy Melson.

He married (1st) Louisa J. Evans. They had three children:
(1) Charles P. Draper
(2) Mary E. Draper
(3) Flora A. Draper

He married (2nd) Sarah Ann Crites on 14 Feb 1869 in Carroll County, Indiana. (Note: After James H. Draper's death in 1878, Sarah married (2nd) to James' older brother, Stephen Draper.)

James H. Draper and Sarah Crites had the following children:
(4) George F. Draper
(5) Margaret E. Draper
(6) William J. Draper
(7) Lilly L. Draper
(8) Jesse E. Draper

James H. Draper served in the Civil War. He enrolled at Lafayette, Indiana as a private in Company F, 154th Regiment, Indiana Infantry Volunteers. He mustered out on 4 August 1865. The widow's pension record for his widow, Sarah, was No. W.O. 272-145.
