Joy was a gentle, kind, and extremely hardworking man. Affectionately known as "Swede" to his friends, he was a master storyteller with a special love for the Old West. To support his large family, he worked double shifts as a meat cutter in a refrigerated room at the nearby packing house. After family hunting or fishing trips, grandchildren gathered close to watch his skill at butchering deer and to learn from him the best ways to gut and prepare fish. Skilled at first aid, he was the family "doctor" that his children and grandchildren ran to when hurt or sick. An attentive and caring father, he helped his children build and race soap box derby cars. Joy was Swedish in ancestry and worshiped with his family in the Lutheran church.
