82-year-old Willard Austin was Belleville's oldest Civil War veteran at the time of his death. According to his obituary in the February 23, 1914 edition of the Newark Evening News, he had enlisted in Co. G, 7th Regt. of Connecticut Volunteers as a private and had risen to the rank of Captain. A Belleville resident for more than 40 years, he was a member of the G.A.R., and the Masonic fraternal organization. He was survived by 3 sons and a daughter. His wife, the former Adeline Spear (1842-1913), had predeaceased him a year earlier.
