Boone County Democrat December 20, 1907
Mrs. H.B. Bates, a sister of C.E. and George McNeil of this city, passed away at Alamogordo, New Mexico, Wednesday night, December 11, after a lingering illness with consumption. The remains were brought to Boone, arriving here Saturday evening, accompanied by her husband, Mr. Bates, and two daughters, Elizabeth and Mary, and her brother, George McNeil, who went to Des Moines Saturday morning to meet the funeral party, and were taken to the home of her brother, C.E. McNeil, 423 Tama street. From there the funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Collins and attended by a large number of sorrowing friends of the deceased and of the stricken family, burial in East Linwood cemetery. Fanny J. McNeil was born in Harford, New York, in 1863, and was 44 years of age at the time of her death. Fifteen years ago she was married to Mr. H.B. Bates at Greenwich, N.Y. In August 1905 the family came to Boone and resided here until last March when her rapidly failing health made a change of climate imperative and they removed to New Mexico. It was of no avail, however, and she continued to sink rapidly until death relieved her as stated above. She was a devoted member of the Methodist church and lived an earnest Christian life, which endeared her to many friends during her short residence in Boone. Besides the husband and children mentioned above she leaves her mother, Mrs. H. McNeil, three sister, Mrs. C.C. Ripley, of Spearfish, Dakota, Mrs. L.H. Ripley, of Aliadin, Wyoming, and Miss Elizabeth McNeil, of Middle Falls, N.Y. and three brothers, Fred, of Eldorn, and Charles E., and George H. McNeil of Boone, who are given the sincere sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their bereavement.
