MACON, GA - Philip Allan Dodson, 67, passed away January 10 in Tamarac, Fla. A memorial service will be held Sunday, January 16, 2011 at Temple Beth Israel at 3 p.m. Rabbi Laurence Schlesinger will officiate. -Philip is survived by his wife of 25 years, Ann Porges Dodson of Macon; son Jeffrey (Lynne) Dodson of Jasper, Ga.; daughter-in-law Melissa Dodson of Macon; uncle David (Odelle) Dodson of Griffin, Ga.; Saul (Judy) Strachman of Bay Harbor Island, Fla.; aunts, Marilyn Dodson of Hogansville, Ga., and Mary Dodson; stepmother Wynette Cook of Vidalia, Ga.; grandchildren, Allison (Damiel) Thompson of Forsyth; Will Dodson of Jasper, Ga.; great grandchildren, Joseph Thompson and Anna Marie Thompson of Forsyth; brother and sister in-law Paul and Susie Porges of Solon, Ohio. Philip was predeceased by his son Philip Dodson Jr. of Forsyth, Ga., and brother MacMillar Dodson and his parents, Allen and Allison Dodson. -Philip was born September 13, 1943 in Bradenton, Fla., to Allen and Allison Dodson. He graduated from Hogansville High School in 1961. He entered the U.S. Army and served from 1962 to 1969. While in the Army, he was based at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins as an administrative specialist; an information specialist and English teacher in Taegu, South Korea and worked as a photojournalist for The European Stars and Stripes in Darmstadt, Germany. -Philip worked for the Macon News as the City Hall and police beat reporter from 1969 to 1971. He was the chief copy editor for The Macon News from 1971 to 1975 and News Editor for The Macon Telegraph from 1975 to 1981, assistant managing editor for news from 1981 until 2000 when he joined The Telegraph's Editorial Board until his retirement in 2008. -Phil won many awards during his more than three decades as a journalist. In 1982 he won 1st place-layout from the Georgia Press Association and 2nd place for serious column from the GPA in 2008. Phil was a member of the Downtown Lions Club where he chaired the sight committee and he was secretary for the Middle Georgia Coin Club. Philip Dodson
