Grave marker for Mary Jane Grummond is about 75 yards from her brother's, Stephen Benedict Grummond, plot. Stephen was Mayor of Detroit for one two year term in 1884 and 1885. Stephen and Mary's brother George Washington Grummond caused the deaths of 81 Army and civilians and an equal number of Native Americans on 21 December 1866 near Fort Phil Kearny, Story , Wyoming simply because George wanted a higher rank in the regular Army.
Mary helped her husband Richard George Evans make the Detroit and Cleveland Steam Navigation Company one of the most successful passenger and freight companies on the Great Lakes during its 84 years in business.
Marker is so worn, it is very difficult to read.
