In 1849 he crossed the plains with a few other hardy spirits in the fore front of the Great Gold Rush. Returning east across the Isthmus a little later, he again crossed the plains in 1852 with a great train in which was his father's family and many relatives.

He bought for $950 a tract of land beginning at a stake in the middle of Cache Creek, Yolo County, CA.

Lewis spent most of the summer, following the death of his brother Roland Rudolph Willard on 11 Jun 1859 petitioning for and then acting as administrator of Roland's estate.

He appeared on the census of 20 Jun 1860 in the household of his parents, Alexander Hamilton Willard Sr and Eleanor McDonald, at Elk Grove Post Office, Franklin township, Sacramento county, California, called "Lewis", aged 28, a farmer owning $1,800 personal estate, born in "Wis."

He married Angeline Billups when he was 28 and she 16 years.

Lewis had also been called "Louis A. Willard" according to the 1870 census.

After his wife Ann died, he joined his brother Joel and went to Cornucopia, NV becoming a freight hauling contractor for the gold mines, working as many as 25 teams at the peak. He bought a hotel & blacksmith shop. After the gold boom, he moved to Elko, Nevada where he bought and sold many mines.
