Franklin entered service one day shy of his 26th birthday, August 23, 1864, as Assistant Surgeon, 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry for a term of 3 years. His Grave Registration Card, State of Ohio, shows that he died October 8, 1864 at Atlanta, GA of fever. He was buried at Woodland Cemetery December 20, 1865. His name is on the large family obelisk. A smaller monument which actually marks his grave is inscribed with: "Franklin M. Asst. Surg. 103 O.V.I." Since he did not enter service in the summer of 1862 when the 103rd O.V.I. was recruited in the Cleveland area, he may have been aassigned as a medical officer to the 103rd O.V.I. by the State of Ohio.

His father was James Andrews, a successful farmer in Bath Twp., Greene Co. Ohio. His mother was Mary C. Andrews. Both parents were born in Ohio.
