Ray was a Police Lieutenant with the Modesto Police Department and served the public for thirty-two years from 1954 to 1986. Ray formed the first Police Explorer Post and is the father to Ray Coyle Jr. who is a retired Police Sergeant.

Ray was a fine gentleman and he will be missed.

Ray, or Bud as he was called by family and friends, entered Heaven on December 10, 2011. He was born on February 12, 1932, in Binghamton, New York, to Raymond and Mildred Coyle. He spent his early years in Dover Plains and Youngsville, New York. His family moved to Modesto in 1947.

Bud graduated from Modesto High School and in December, 1951, he joined the U. S. Army. After basic training at Fort Ord, he was sent to Korea for a year, and during his three year enlistment he reached the rank of Staff Sgt.
He joined the Modesto Police Department in February, 1955, and reached the rank of Lieutenant by the time he retired in July 1986. While working, Bud attended classes at Modesto Junior College and graduated in 1977.

He was interested in the Boy Scout program and started Scout Troop 199. In 1975, he was given the Scouts' Silver Beaver award. When he retired, he worked for the Boy Scouts on a volunteer basis and specialized in establishing Explorer Posts. In 1993, he was the recipient of the Liberty Bell Award given by the Stanislaus County Bar Association.

He was a member of the following organizations: Dry Creek Community Church, The Lepidopterists' Society, Yosemite Area Boy Scout Council, the American Legion, Past President and District Lt. Governor of Modesto Civitan Club, International Order of Odd Fellows, Old Fishermen's Club, and two time President of the Stanislaus County Peace Officers Association.

Bud is survived by his wife, Norrine Coyle, children Raymond Coyle, Ron Coyle and Diane Coughran, a brother Richard Coyle, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Patricia Foley.

Visitation will be at Franklin & Downs Colonial Chapel, 12th and G Streets on Sunday, December 18, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. The funeral service will be Monday, December 19th at Modesto Covenant Church, 913 Floyd Avenue, at 1:30 p.m. followed by a brief graveside service and reception. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Yosemite Area Council Boy Scouts at 4031 Technology Drive, Modesto, CA 95356 or the Modesto Police Historical Society at 600 Tenth Street, Modesto, CA 95354, attention Phyllis Schellman.
