He is listed as a Revolutionary War Veteran, a Kentucky Pioneer, and an Indian Fighter. He was one of the first settlers to Green County, under the command of Col. William Pitman, and Capt. Benjamin Logan. According to his pension papers, he was responsible for building Block houses. It was in the early 1780s that Nicholas settled in at Pitman's Station and a few years latter relocated due to Indian Conflict. He and his family moved to a fort near what is now Bardstown, Kentucky, and Kilgore Station in today's Logan County, Kentucky this Station was raided and destroyed in 1784 after this Nicholas went back and resettled Pitman's Station, the attack came March 17, 1789 that killed his mother.
