Russell spent his boyhood in the Elfros area attending school there and in Regina until
he was about 16. He later attended college
at Greeley in Colorado.
In 1924 his father accepted a contract to build a highway in Wyoming going through Green River and took Russell with him for the project. Oren returned to Greeley after the highway was completed, and Allen stayed at Joe Stewart's ranch in Green River.
There, he met Bessie Coffelt.
After their marriage they remained at Green River where Russell worked at various jobs until 1929 when he moved his family to Portland in search of better employment.
In 1930 his father requested Russell return
to Elfros to take over the homestead due do declining health. The family moved to Elfros.
Although an inexperienced farmer, Russell did his best to conquer the challenges facing him. He spent many hours working his land, fighting three years of dust storms trying to make his farm a success. Their hard work was commendable; however, unfortunately the Great Depression years made them one of the victims. By 1935 Bessie desperately wanted to move to the west coast as she detested the farm life and hoped they could improve their financial problems. Russell did not want to leave his brothers at Elfros, although reluctantly agreed and they auctioned their possessions and the family moved to British Columbia in where they bought an acre of land in the Whalley area of Surrey Municipality at the cost of $250.00.
There, Russell worked for the Municipality of Surrey clearing land for the establishment of Bear Creek Park, and at the gypsum plant.
In 1943 Russell and Bessie separated. Russell moved to Calgary in Alberta where he was employed by the City of Calgary as greens keeper in the parks and cemetery.
The children stayed in Surrey with their mother.
