Funeral services for Niels J. Nielsen will be held at 2pm Friday, August 28. Pastor Robert Hermanson will officiate at the service at Nathanael Lutheran Church at Dagmar, interment will be in Nathanael Cemetery. Mr. Nielsen, 93, died Sunday morning August 213, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital.
Pallbearers will be Larry Anderson, Lon Michels, Ken Nielsen, Steven Stageberg, Randy Wangerin and Scott Wangerin. Honorary bearers will be Alvin Christensen, Gary Christensen, James Johnson, Oluf Petersen, Gilbert Sorensen, Carl Thidemann and Donald Thuesen.
Born in Thorsted, Denmark on April 23, 1894, he was the son of Jens M and Jensine Nielsen.
He came to the United States in 1908 and settled on a farm northwest of Dagmar. He worked in Harvey, North Dakota for three years before returning to the family farm in 1911.
In 1918 he bought his own farm near his parents and on August 27, 1918 he married Rosa Christensen at Plentywood.
They farmed until retiring in 1958, He spent his retirement at the hobbies he dearly loved, raising flowers and gardening.
He was very active in community affairs serving as clerk of School District 38 for 25 years; was a member of the Danish Brotherhood Lodge; served on the board of the Dagmar Co-op store; and was an agent-director of the Farmer's Mutual Fire Insurance Company for many years. He was a member of Nathanael Lutheran Church of Dagmar.
He has been a resident of Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home since February 1986.
Survivors include his wife Rosa of Dagmar; two sons, Niels B. and Harold C. both of Dagmar; two daughters, Elizabeth, Mrs. Oliver Anderson of Plentywood and Marie, Mrs. Sophus Christensen of Antelope; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and nine great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, one daughter, Sylvia Lindberg, one grandson, Darrel Lindberg, one great grandson and one great granddaughter, his parents and two sisters.
