Murder Victim. Hazel Tanis was a patron at the Lafayette Bar in Paterson New Jersey on June 17 1966 when it was robbed by two men. Mrs. Tanis and two other people in the bar were shot. She died of her wounds on July 14, 1966. Middleweight boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter was twice convicted of these murders. Both convictions were overturned on appeal. These crimes were dramatized in the Denzel Washington movie, "The Hurricane."
