Joseph Anthony "Joe" Krahling, 88, of Annapolis and formerly of Adelphi, a retired firefighter who was also professional singer, died Jan. 31 at Heritage Harbour Health and Rehabilitation Center near Annapolis.

He was born July 23, 1917, in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of the late Elizabeth Cocker and Joseph Warren Krahling.

He retired in 1970 as battalion chief with 27 years as a Washington, D.C. firefighter.

At the age of 17, he was the mystery tenor on the Arthur Godfrey radio show in Washington and during the 1950s he entertained troops as part of the USO. He was also a member of a musical group comprised of several boyhood friends that played locally for 30 years, beginning in the 1950s, and the Fire Department Quartet, where he sang first tenor for 29 years.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Annapolis, the Retired Fire Fighters Association and the Travelling Americans and Starcraft Camper Club. His interests included fishing, camping in a trailer, reading and singing.

Surviving are his wife, three sons, one daughter, two sisters, eight grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. He was the father of the late Catherine Ann Krahling.
