He was born to Ernest and Mercy Adkins in Kimball, Minn. Following his father's death, the family moved to Cass Lake, which is where he made his home until the present with the exception of his military duty. He attended school in Kimball and Cass Lake. He was drafted into the service during World War II and spent his military service on the battleship Iowa as a gunner in the Pacific Theatre. Following his military service, he returned to Cass Lake and worked for the U.S. Forest Service and various other jobs. On June 23, 1956, he married Sally Potvin.

He was a long time member of St. Charles Catholic Church in Cass Lake. He was also an active volunteer fireman for 38 years, and a member of the Jack Kimball American Legion Post 284 of Cass Lake, the V.F.W., the Selective Service Board, and the Mississippi Headwaters blood bank. He was an avid motorcycle rider, and loved to deer hunt with his family and friends. The greatest joy in his life was his interaction with his grandchildren, family and friends.
