Japanese Imperial Family Member. A member of Japan's imperial family and seventh in the line of succession to the Chrysanthemum crown, he was widely known as the "Prince of Sports." A supporter of many athletic organizations and events, the prince himself was a member of a rugby team with teammates who were from the common people. He was gifted with a wonderful sense of humor and did not complain when he was tackled hard in competition. He was also well versed in the arts and science. In recent years, he had become concerned with environmental issues and just a few days before his death, he and his princess had participated in the Nordic-Japan Environmental Conference at Nagano. He strived to maintain good relations with western nations and considered Canada his "second home." He collapsed and died of heart failure while playing squash at the British Embassy in Tokyo.
