Due to deaths of his parents during his early childhood, Lige was raised by his maternal great-aunt Emily (Justice) Jackson and her daughter (and his double first cousin once removed) Janie Jackson, residents of Coalfield, Tennessee. After turning 18, he moved to Clarksville, Arkansas, where he met his future wife, Ida Soard. They were married on December 22, 1918, in Clarksville.
