"C.F. Brown dies after brief illness - Death came to Charles Francisco Brown, eldest son of the late Henry R. and Lucy Francisco Brown, late Thursday afternoon at Takoma Hospital.
It was the passing from the scene of one of Greeneville's fine old stalwarts after a mercifully brief period of serious illness.
C.F., as he had been affectionately known for over four score years in Greeneville, suffered a coronary attack at his home on Brown's Hill during the very early hours of Thursday morning and was quickly rushed by ambulance to the hospital. Later in the day he appeared to be responding perfectly to treatment and was actually in fine spirits, but yesterday he suffered a second seizure and death came at about 4:00 p.m.
C.F. was born in Greeneville on August 12, 1878. He was graduated from V.P.I. in Blacksburg, Virginia, which both he and his younger brother, Joseph R. attended at the same time. Both played in the school band and took part in the various other music activities of the Institute.
Back in Greeneville he sang in the choir of the First Presbyterian Church at a time when his father directed the choir and his mother was the organist.
He went into business with his brother, Joseph R., in St. Louis, Missouri, and later returned to Greeneville as co-partner with his father in The American Calendar Company, of which C.F. became vice-president. In the development of this company he was active and successful for many years. In more recent years of partial retirement, he organized The Tennessee Supply Company as a means to keep in practice.
Mr. Brown was a charter member of the Greeneville Rotary Club, and a member of Kerbela Shrine of Knoxville. He was for many years a deacon of the First Presbyterian Church, during the long pastorate of Dr. Jere Moore.
In 1920, Mr Brown was married to Miss Alice Marshall Howison of Ashland, Virginia, a member of a family of distinction in educational work. They became acquainted in Greenville, North Carolina where Miss Howison was visiting relatives and where C.F. visited his sister, Mrs. J. B. James, who introduced them and later played their wedding march.
Mr. Brown is survived by his widow; three daughters, Mrs. Charles Rhodes of Greeneville, Mrs. L.L. Washburn of Atlanta, Georgia and Mrs. C.P. Edwards, III, of Kingsport and by eight grandchildren, Janette and Genevive Rhodes, Lee, Charles and Alice Washburn, and Penn, Amy and Brown Edwards. Also surviving are two brothers, Jospeh R. Brown of Dallas, Texas and R. Francisco Brown of Greeneville, and two sisters, Mrs. J.B. James of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Mrs. J.M. Barnes of Lexington, Kentucky.
Funeral rites for Mr. Brown will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. from the Chapel of Kiser Funeral Home. Dr. Hugh Simon will officiate. Following the chapel services the body will be taken by funeral coach to Salem, Virginia for cremation after which it will be returned to Greeneville where private interment ceremonies will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Sunday at Oak Grove Cemetery.
Charles Francisco Brown was a man of amazing vitality for his years, coupled with such a youthful appearance the many reading this today, and remember seeing him on the street or visiting some of his many friends and relatives only a few days ago, will be compelled to re-read the story before full realization that he has passed can be grasped. He had a wonderful outlook on life and was possessed with graciousness and charm which made everyone so fond of him in such a lasting way.
Even though his loss will be keenly felt by his loved ones, associates and friends, there is satisfaction in knowing that the paths which he traveled are better today because he was here yesterday."
