Mrs. Sandifer Dies In Danville
Mrs. Winifred E. Butt Sandifer, 82, of 305 East Lexington Avenue, Danville, died at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, March 8, at her home after a long illness.
Born March 2, 1884, at Spencer Place, South Logan County, the family home of her parents, the late Dr.Albert L. and Elizabeth Townsend Butt, Mrs. Sandifer was graduated in 1902 from Logan College at Russellville, and in 1906 from Randolph-Macon Womans College, Lynchburg, where she was president of her class.
Mrs. Sandifer came to Danville in 1909 to become head of the Department of English at old Caldwell College, which later became Kentucky College for Women while she was a faculty member. She was married in Logan County on Oct. 15, 1913 to Danville City Judge Henry G. Sandifer. She was an active member of Centenary Methodist Church and taught its women's class for a number of years.
Survivors are one daughter, Mrs.Walter R. Gattis of Frankfort; a sister Mrs. Frank J. Cheek, two granddaughters Margaret and Mary Gattis, Frankfort; three nephews, Dr. Thos. Anthony and Albert deGraffenried, and a niece, Miss Martha R. Cheek.
Funeral services were conducted at 4 o'clock Thursday at Danville at Stith Funeral Home by Dr. Albert W. Sweazy, pastor of Centenary Methodist Church. Burial was in Bellevue Cemetery.
