EMIL N. BERG
Mr. Berg was born at Sampont, Belgium, on March 13, 1863. He came to this country with his parents in 1872 and the family settled a short distance outside of Appleton, Wis. The district about Appleton was at that time on the edge of the great pine forest and here the Berg family settled to make a home for themselves. Mr. Berg remained under the parental roof seven years after he came to this country. He, like his parents and brothers, was industrious and in a short time the old folds had come, with the assistance of the several sons, to circumstances where the boys felt that they could go out into the world and make homes for themselves. Accordingly young Berg turned his face northward in 1879 and settled in Marinette, Wis., where he went into business with his brother. He remained in business at that place 11 years and Mr. Berg was highly spoken of by all that came to know him at Marinette. In 1884 he was married to Etta McCarty and for five years after their marriage the young couple remained at Marinette. In 1890, such encouraging reports came to Mr. Berg's ears of the, then, young town of Crystal Falls that he decided to come here. He came and started in the restaurant business in a small way. By careful and constant attention to his business he managed to increase his trade until at the time of his death he managed a business of large proportions.
Mr. Berg was a man of strong opinions and fearless of expression. He was not a meddler and never pushed his opinions upon anyone but was always honest with himself, a quality that few possess and one that always promotes admiration. He was a firm believer in lodge insurance as is evidenced by the fact that at the time of his death he was a member of four insurance orders, the Maccabees, Workmen; Woodmen and Mystic Workers. He was also a member of the K. of P. of which order he was a devoted disciple.
He was prominent in public matters and his name is prominently interwoven with the history of the city of Crystal Falls and the county of Iron for the past ten years. He was a live long Democrat and was for several years the chairman of the Democratic county committee. At the time of his death he was chief of the fire department and a member of the board of public works. He leaves a wife and five sons, John P., Charles, Francis,Clarence and William Jennings to mourn the loss of a kind husband and a devoted father.
