George Peter Carrell was born July 13, 1851 on the family farm near Summerville, Chattooga Co., GA, to John B. W. and Mary Ann Baker Carroll. Here is his obituary from the Summerville newspaper.

"In Memory
Of G. P. Carroll, formerly of Chattooga county. He married Miss Emma McConnell, Nov. 14th, 1872, who died June 6th, 1877. He married again in Oct. 1873 (sic) to Miss Mary C. Baker, who now with eight children and many relatives mourn his departure, yet we do not mourn as those who had no hope. He had been a worthy member of the M. E. church south about twenty-five years; also an obedient son, an affectionate husband and father. He taught his children to be obedient, and trained them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. The healing balm for our sorrow is, that he is now walking in the sunlight of eternal bliss with Jesus, in whom he trusted to the end of his natural life. And with father, mother, brothers and many loved ones who have crossed over the river and are resting under the shade of the tree. How sweet the thought, our loss is his eternal gain, and sweeter still, brothers, sisters and dear relatives may all so live as to make one animated family in heaven, where there is no more parting, no night, no pain nor sorrow, but all will be joy, peace and happiness forever and ever.

Oh! how sweet it will be in that beautiful home,
So free from all sorrow and pain;
With songs on our lips and harps in our hands,
To meet one another again.

Notes: George P. Carroll and Mary C. Baker were married Oct. 1877, not 1873 as stated in the obituary. He is buried in Heflin cemetery, Brown county, Texas. After his death, his wife Mary, and the younger children moved back to Summerville, GA, where she is buried. The Carroll family varied in the spelling of the last name; some using Carrell, and most using Carroll. The M. E. church south was the Methodist Episcopal Church South.---Carolyn Womack
