The son of Irish immigrants, he was married to Ellen Ruth Herron. He was killed in a tragic accident, crushed between two railroad cars at Gallitizen, PA. He was rushed to the Altoona hospital , but died shortly after arrival. He left a wife and two young children. His wife remarried three times, but was left a widow each time. His son is John J. McGuire, the well known science fiction writer and winner of the Nebula and Prometheus awards. No stone marks his grave. Two of his Brett cousins, who were priests, conducted his funeral.
