Mary Burney Jordan (born 10 December 1849 in Monticello, Jasper County, Georgia), the daughter of Frances Caroline Burney and Thomas Meriwether Jordan, was a descendent of American Revolutionary soldiers Thomas Meriwether of Virginia and John Cargill of Virginia. Mary was married on 7 October 1869 in Jasper County, Georgia, to Jasper Banks Groves, son of Mary L. and John J. Groves of Georgia. In the 1870 census, the couple was living in DeKalb County, Georgia with his parents. The couple had moved to Denison, Grayson County, Texas by the time of the 1880 census when Jasper is listed as an express route agent. They were the parents of 3 children: daughter Mary, son William H. and another child who was deceased by 1910. Jasper died 26 May 1900 in Gayilana, Mexico. Mary was accepted for DAR membership in Georgia on 4 February 1897, became a charter member of Mary Isham Keith Chapter on 15 June 1898, and remained a member of DAR until her death in 1940. Per her death certificate, she died 16 February 1940 in Fort Worth and was buried in the Calvary Cemetery (a Catholic cemetery which adjoins Oakwood Cemetery) in Fort Worth. Also buried in the same plot are her son William H. Groves and her daughter Mary Harvie Groves (Mrs. Daniel Henry Kernaghan) who died in 1946 in St. Louis, Missouri. Mary Isham Keith Chapter placed NSDAR insignia on Mary Groves' grave marker in Calvary Cemetery which was dedicated 9 April 2011. [Source: J. Evetts]
