Chicago Tribune, October 04, 2000:
Exec Harry B. Clow Jr. Of Rand McNally Family
By James Janega
Harry Beach Clow Jr., 99, grandson of the founders of Rand McNally & Co. and the Clow Corp., and a once prominent figure in Chicago business and social circles, died of natural causes Sunday, Oct. 1, in his Palm Desert, Calif., home.

With his second wife, Leonore, Mr. Clow frequently was seen on Chicago's charity-social circuit during the 1950s and '60s, and he served in directorships at his family's businesses until the early 1980s.

For decades, he handled much of the labor negotiations for Rand McNally, where he was also responsible for opening printing plants around the country and had a special interest in the company's growth in the road map business. As an influential Clow Corp. board member, he helped select executives that charted that company's course through the 20th Century.

But it was in social situations that Mr. Clow--known affectionately as "Firecracker Harry" for his trademark pyrotechnic party displays--was most well-known. A man who cut a glamorous figure at social and charity events, Mr. Clow loved the mix of people at a good party and had a flair both for hosting and being a guest.

"He did it in style," said his son, Gerald Clow. Former Rand McNally chairman and chief executive Andrew "Sandy" McNally IV said Mr. Clow was just as enthusiastic and outgoing at work.

"He took joy and pleasure in seeing other people being happy," McNally said.

Born in Chicago, Mr. Clow attended the Latin School and graduated in 1920 from the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Conn. He received a bachelor's degree from Yale University in 1924 and went to work the same year for Rand McNally, a company founded by his maternal grandfather where his father was president.

Mr. Clow served as a vice president of Rand McNally from the 1930s until 1970 and was on its board of directors into the 1980s. The Chicago-based printer was originally known mainly for printing railroad tickets and textbooks. By Mr. Clow's retirement, the company had specialized in the mapmaking and book publishing for which it is now known.

From 1933 until 1980, Mr. Clow also served on the board of the Clow Corp., a pipe and valve manufacturing firm started by his paternal grandfather that helped build much of the city's sewer, water and fire hydrant infrastructure. The company was sold in 1985.

Mr. Clow was a member of the Chicago Club for more than 40 years and a member of the University Club of Chicago. A champion amateur golfer, he belonged to two North Shore golf clubs and went trout fishing at the Coleman Lake Club in Goodman, Wis.

His first marriage, in 1925, to the former Josephine Dunham, ended in divorce. He was married in 1945 to the former Leonore Cudahy, who died in 1992.

In his retirement, Mr. Clow continued to consult with Clow and Rand McNally. He also spent five months a year in Palm Desert, where he mainly worked on his golf game.

Mr. Clow is also survived by one son from his first marriage, Harry B. Clow III; two more sons from his second marriage, Christopher and Michael; a daughter from his second marriage, Leonore Brewer Clow; 15 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday in the Wenban Funeral Home, 320 E. Vine Ave., Lake Forest. Mass will be said at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Church of the Holy Spirit, 400 E. Westminster Rd., Lake Forest.
