"Jess Hobby, painter of pictures and for fourteen years a popular resident of Oak Park, near Chicago, died early Tuesday morning, January 25th, of a heart attack which came upon him in the midst of a pleasant conversation with his old friend and painter associate John Nolf, in Mr. Nolf's apartment, late the preceding afternoon. Until that moment he had appeared in accustomed health and good spirit. During the last ten years he painted pictures and taught classes in painting, part of the time in a studio in Oak Leaves building. In this last decade of his life he won many close friends among students and the business community. Moreover the later years of his life brought distinction among painters and his work was hung in noted galleries and he won awards in a number of exhibits. Mr. Hobby was born in Laurens, Otsego county, in 1871, but most of his life was spent in Morris, Joliet, Chicago and Oak Park ... Surviving members of his family are Mrs. Hobby and their daughter, Mrs. Carl Meder; a son, Erwin, and three grandchildren, all of Joliet. The funeral services were held in Joliet by the Rev. Edgar Woolhouse of Chicago, formally of Laurens." ["The Otsego Farmer & Republican" (Cooperstown, NY), Friday, Feb. 11, 1938, Page Eight]
