Alice Babbitt

Alice Babbitt, 81, of Paxton, passed away on Dec. 18, 2011, at the Indian Hills Manor Nursing Home in Ogallala.
Alice was born on July 22, 1930, at Wilsonville, the daughter of Charles Renwick and Mary Alice (Sherrard) Anderson. She grew up on a farm near Wilsonville attending a one-room schoolhouse until the eighth grade. She graduated from the Wilsonville High School in 1948 and from the University of Nebraska in 1952. Alice was employed as the Home Extension Agent for Keith County for two and one-half years following her graduation from college. She married Merlyn Babbitt on May 16, 1954, at Wilsonville. In 1966 she began teaching at the Paxton High School and taught for 27 years before her retirement. Alice was a leader of 4-H clubs for 25 years, most of them as the leader of the Spoons and Spools Club at Paxton. She was active in the Paxton United Methodist Church, serving as chairperson of the Ad Council for 10 years, as well as being an active member of the United Methodist Women serving as financial secretary for many years. She enjoyed caring for her yard and garden, playing bridge and doing craft projects such as stained glass and painting. Survivors include two daughters, Deb (Mike) Hyde, of North Platte, Gwen Peck, of Claremore, Okla.; one son, Doug (Lisa) Babbitt, of Paxton; sisters, Zora (Chet) Yoder, of Blue Hill,Melva Anderson, of Murphys, Calif., Dora Sylvester, of Albuquerque, N.M.; brother, Frank (Ila) Anderson, of Mitchell; sister-in-law, Dorothy Anderson, of York; grandchildren, Paul Peck and Serena Peck (fiance, Larry), both of Claremore, Okla., Jack and Will Babbitt, of Paxton, Sami (Jason) Erickson and Val Hyde (partner, Courtney), both of North Platte; great-grandchildren, Jaydn, Rylan and Brecken Erickson and Corby Condon. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Merlyn Babbitt; two brothers, Charles and Howard Anderson, a sister, Audry Anna Anderson; two brothers-in-law, Ted Anderson and Don Sylvester. Memorials are suggested to the Paxton United Methodist Church. Services will be at 10 a.m. (MST) on Friday, Dec. 23, at the Paxton United Methodist Church with Pastor Adam Davenport officiating. Burial will be at the Paxton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Gubser Funeral Home.
