Irving Foreman

IRVING FOREMAN Irving Junior Foreman passed away in his home Oct. 5, 2009, in the care of his son, Russell and wife, Velda, after a long courageous fight with lung cancer. "I.J." was born June 25, 1930, in Beaver, Utah, to John Irving and Averalia "Billie" Cartwright Foreman. He moved to Las Vegas his junior year of high school and graduated from Las Vegas High School in 1948. He married Velda M. Peterson July 8, 1950. He began a career with the International Operating Engineers Union, eventually working at the Nevada Test Site, retiring in 1984. He built the home in which they would begin their family and live in until 1960, when they moved to Boulder City. There they raised three children, Stephen Cartwright, John Russell and Janis Lee. After the children had grown, they returned to Las Vegas. During his life, he proudly served in the National Guard, learned how to fly, enjoyed hunting, was a member of the NRA, and dabbled in landscaping, electrical and real estate ventures. He loved life and the beauty of the outdoors. I.J. was a strong, conservative, reliable, kind, friendly and patient man. Though not without fault, wherever he went, he made a friend. Caring for animals, enjoying nature, gardening and growing, building and fixing, and nurturing, were his passions in life. He taught his children and grandchildren many valuable and important things in his lifetime and will be greatly missed. His grandchildren especially enjoyed his unique humor and know he would understand if they tell him one last "Goodnight Papa, don't let the purple elephants step on you!" He is survived by his wife; his three children; and five grandchildren, Stephen Barry, Julie, Miranda, James and Megan. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and other beloved friends and family members. He is now with them all and his favorite four-legged friend, Sheba. The family has had a private gathering to honor their beloved "Papa."
