CLAYPOOL HILL, Va. — John M. Coon Jr., 80, of the May Fair House Rehab and Nursing in Claypool Hill, Va. and formerly from Tazewell, Va., died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011 at Clinch Valley Medical Center. He was born in Bluefield, Va. and was a son of the late John M. Coon Sr. and Trula Coon.
Mr. Coon was a member of the Calvary Baptist Chapel in Wittens Mill, Va., where he was Sunday School Director, taught teen classes and was active in the Seniors Club in the church. He was retired from GTE where he was lineman supervisor. He was a member and past president of the Tazewell Lions Club and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Aker Coon; sister, Margaret; and a brother, James Coon.
He is survived by son, Steven Coon and wife Jennifer, The Plains, Ohio; stepson, Robert Danny Angles, Princeton, W.Va.; daughters, Pam Chaney and husband Chuck, Salem, Va., Lisa Rose and husband Timothy, North Tazewell, Va.; brother, Ronald L. Coon and wife Juanita, Tazewell, Va.; sisters, Laura Godsey and husband Charles, Prince William, Va., Phyllis Pruitt, Concord, N.C., Brenda Coon, Granite Falls, N.C.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and Helen June Galate Coon, mother of his children.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011 at 12 noon at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, Va. with Dr. Chuck Trent officiating. Burial will follow in the Grandview Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Bradley Carter, Hop Kinder, Kinder, Lawrence Smith, Jacob Coon and Justin Coon.
Friends may visit with the family on Thursday from 11 a.m. until the hour of services.
