Veteran of World War 2

Leeward L. Albert, 82, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Hudson, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at Allen Hospital, Waterloo.

He was born Oct. 11, 1921, in rural Dinsdale. He married Elsie Petersen on Aug. 2, 1944. She preceded him in death.

Mr. Albert was a 1939 graduate of Reinbeck High School. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theater, then worked for Wick Brothers Station, later opening Lee's Cafe. In 1952 he moved to a farm on the Tama-Black Hawk County line and farmed for 35 years.

Survivors include three sons: Jerome (Kathy) of Cedar Falls, Alfred of Minneapolis and Brian (Robin) of Marshalltown; a daughter, Becky (John) Bruckner of Omaha; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild; and a brother, Kenneth (Leona) of Washburn.

Preceded in death by an infant daughter, Brenda Marie; and a sister, Lorna Petersen.

Services 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Traer, with burial in Lincoln Township Cemetery rural Reinbeck. Friends may call after noon today at Hand Funeral Home, Reinbeck, with family present from 4 to 7 p.m.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice of Waterloo or the church.
