The Civil War Pension also shows Sarah Elizabeth as the widow. Listing the minor as A J Bales threw me but then I found the guardianship document. I presume since A J became the guardian, they just use his name instead of Harlen.

Then the 1870 Census shows Sarah remarried to Andrew J Bales. Andrew was married previously and had two children. Harlan is now listed with Bales as his last name. Probably because of the previous Guardianship they just use Bales. But when he died it seems they went back to using his father's name.

This is the info I used to base my suggestion that Sarah Elizabeth Barton Waddle Bales is the mother of Harlen Waddle. Also several family lists on Ancestry show this. It was through one of these that I found the 1850 Census with Bartlett. I haven't suggested the changes to Sarah's memorial yet. What info do you have to show that Sarah is not the mother of Harlen?
