Mr. Shoemaker was a native of Jefferson County, Ala., and a resident of the Coast for many years. He was a retired crane operator for Ingalls Shipbuilding and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was of the Christian faith.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Brown Shoemaker; his parents, Dennis and Mamie Shoemaker; three brothers, Robert Carroll "RC" Shoemaker, Leon Shoemaker and Edward Shoemaker; and a great-granddaughter, Melanie Renee Nix.
Survivors include four sons, Gary Coats and Terry Coats, both of Pass Christian, Lamar "Marty" Shoemaker of Sunrise, Fla., and Bart Fredrick of Corner, Ala.; two daughters, Linda Estelle Remillard and Wanda Elaine Lindsay, both of Gulfport; two brothers, Clarence Shoemaker of Hueytown, Ala., and Buster Shoemaker of Bryceland, La.; two sisters, Wilma Andrews of Pleasant Grove, Ala., and Martha Rickles of Orlando, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Riemann Memorial Funeral Home, U.S. 49 North, Gulfport. A service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with burial in Biloxi National Cemetery.
