Sgt. Robert Alan Cumberland, USMC, 44, of Jacksonville, N.C., formerly of Wausau, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011, at his residence.

Sgt. Robert Alan Cumberland was currently serving in the United States Marine Corps where he was awarded the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Letter of Appreciation and Certificate of Appreciation.

He was preceded in death by his father, Duane Cumberland.

A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 23, 2011, at the New River Air Station Base Chapel with the Rev. Tom Doheny presiding. Burial will follow at the Coastal Carolina State Veteran's Cemetery with military honors.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Allison Cumberland; sons, Kori Cumberland, Markus Cumberland and Malcolm Cumberland, all of the home; daughters, Tara Marie Sammoms (husband, Michael) of Conyers, Ga., and Kala Monique Cumberland, of the home; mother, Jane K. Cumberland of Wausau; brothers, Thomas Cumberland of Wauzeka, Mark Cumberland and companion, Carrie Koski, of DePere, and Russell Cumberland and wife, Lisa; sisters, Barbara West and husband, Robert, of Kronenwetter, Kay M. Knapp and husband, Dale, of Merrill, and Lynn M. Cumberland of Wauzeka; grandchild, Aiden James Cumberland; several nieces and a nephew, many relatives and friends, and a very special buddy, Kayden I. Pickett.
