Alonzo Grove Ludden was born February 28, 1846 in Augusta County, Va. to Pastor Alonzo Payson Ludden and his wife Caroline.

Alonzo was the eldest child of seven. His father was the Pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Berne.
