WH was the son of William Henry Blanks II and Nancy Narcissus Young. He was born in Georgia in 1846 and shows up in the Lauderdale Co, MS census in 1850 at the age of four. He was the youngest of eight children:

He was only 11 when his mother died and 13 when his father died, leaving everything to him and his 16-year-old sister Nancy.

WH served the Confederacy in the Civil War in Company H, Mississippi 2nd Infantry Regiment, under the command of John Cochran in Lauderdale County, MS. He enlisted in 1862 and was still in active service at the close of the war in 1865.

On October 31, 1867, he married Martha Lettie “Mattie” Carpenter in Lauderdale Co, MS. He was 21. She was 19. They made their home in Daleville, Lauderdale County where they had six girls:

Annie Josephine Blanks 1877–1961
Sarah Willie Blanks 1884–1970
Ora Alice Blanks 1889–1917
Velma O Blanks 1891–1981
There may have also been a boy, John, who was born about 1875 and died as an infant, but sources are lacking.
The family had a farm, but WH also supported his family by working as a laborer in a saw mill.

Sometime between 1900 and 1910, they moved to Laurel, Jones County, Mississippi.

WH died in 1922 at the age of 74 of senility and chronic bronchitis.

Mattie died eleven years later in 1933 of cerebral hemorrhage.
