"GROCER WHO WAS HURT IN TIFF DIES AT HOME IN MANAQUAN
Manasquan- Joseph I Allen, 65, Main Street grocer involved in a scuffle with a Union City man June 28, died yesterday at his home, 38 Main Street. An autopsy to determine the cause of death was performed last night, but Dr. Julius A Toren, county physician, has not released the results, pending an investigation.
Mr. Allen was injured in a fight with Joseph Levins, Union City, June 28 when he attempted to quell a tiff between Levins and an unidentified man in front of his store. Both Mr. Allen and Levins were charged with assault and battery and Saturday night the Union City man was fined $ 200, while charge against Mr. Allen were dismissed.
Manasquan police said this morning that they were withholding the start of an investigation until the autopsy results were made known. Police said they were called to Mr. Allen's home just before noon yesterday, but Mr. Allen was dead when they arrived. Dr. Joseph C Jordan pronounced the man dead.
Mr. Allen was born in Lakewood, son of Amos and Althea H Allen. He moved to Manasquan about 45 years ago and had operated the grocery store for the past 40 years. He was a member of the Manasquan Methodist Church, Wall Lodge, F and AM, and a director of the Manasquan Savings and Loan Association.
Surviving are his wife, Lillian Thomas Allen; a daughter, Mrs. Marion Morris, Little Silver; two sisters, Mrs. Aida Mount, Bay Head, and Mrs. Irving Briedulten, Forest Hills, L.I. a brother, Roscoe Allen, Westfield, and two grandchildren.
The Floyd T Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements".
