Alex was the son of Joseph Baumgartner and Anna Sophie Rostkowski, and the brother of Helen Josephine (Baumgartner) Harlow.

He was married to the former Jaquelyn Bowers, and was the step-father of Jackie's children from a previous marriage - Nancy Lynn (Riley) Stark), and Robert E. Riley. He was step-grandfather of Nancy's son, Michael W. Stark.
